The taxman has intercepted over Sh267 Million worth of fake Euro Currency at the airport.

The Kenya Revenue Authority said on Monday the fake currency was in bundles of Euros, concealed in trouser linings at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

"The money was being ferried from Nairobi to Dubai by Abdi Osman a Norwegian and Mohamed Hassan Eltahir ElHassan, a Sudanese. The two, who are now in police custody, had the money packed in two suitcases concealed in trouser linings," the authority said in a statement.

"The money was seized on Thursday (27th October) at around 10.30 p.m, at Gate 7 JKIA during our shift operations, following intelligence that the two were suspects," said Commissioner Customs and Border Control Mr Julius Musyoki, "They were in 25 bundles of average 178 notes of 500 Euro bills."

The passengers were travelling to Dubai aboard EK722 to UAE and according to the flight itinerary they were to come back to Nairobi on Monday 31/10/2016 then proceed to Mogadishu, Somalia on Wednesday 02/11/2016.

The exhibits are held at the customs warehouse awaiting issuance of seizure notice and subsequent handover to the police for investigations.

KRA said it has tightened the noose over masterminds of illegal cargo at all border points countrywide and is keen to ensure that Kenya is not used as a dumping ground for counterfeit goods
