BROCKTON__Rev. James Mwangi Kang'ethe, a long time Kenyan clergyman and former Kenya Airforce Chaplain at Laikipia Airbase passed away last Friday in Brockton a few miles south of Boston, leaving family and friends grieving the loss. The late Rev. Kangethe (90) leaves behind a loving wife, Victoria Mwangi and 7 children (3 boys and 2 girls). A memorial service will be held this Sunday, December 18 at the Grace Chapel of the Lutheran Church in Brockton located at 900 Main Street. According to family sources speaking to Ajabu Africa News, the late Kangethe passed away soon after midnight at the Good Samaritan hospital where he had been in and out seeking medical treatment for a period of about two years since his health started failing him. During his long life, the late clergyman served with distinction in the many different roles and responsibilities places on him, both in the church, the military and the community. In total, the highly educated Kenya pastor served in ministry for about 54 years, a calling that saw him travel to many different countries of the world, his family said. Born in Maragua village in Murang'a county in central Kenya, the late Kangethe started spreading the gospel as an evangelist in 1952, before joining Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda for a certificate in veterinary science. In 1971, Kangethe was ordained a priest in the Anglican diocese of Nakuru Kenya by then presiding bishop, Lanford Smith. After serving at various churches in Rift valley province, the late Kangethe returned to Makerere University for a BA in Theology. In 1978, the late Kangethe joined the Kenyan armed forces where he served as a Chaplain at the Kenya Airforce base in Laikipia and promptly promoted to the level of Captain, according to details from his own biography that he wrote himself prior to his death. He later joined the St. Paul's Theological College in Kenya before immigrating to the USA in 1999 where he served at various churches in the Worcester region of Massachusetts. Kang'ethe was then licensed to conduct religious services under the Episcopal diocese of Massachusetts in 2003, primarily in the areas around the south shore of Boston. Following the death of the Kenyan pastors, family and friends are meeting daily for prayers and funeral planning at his family's house located at: 30 Oak st. EXT # 407, Brockton 02301 from 6pm. After the memorial service this Sunday at the Grace Chapel that kicks off at 3pm, a viewing of the body will be held on Tuesday morning at the same church starting 9am, followed by the burial to be held at the Melrose Cemetery in Brockton.
