BOSTON, Mass.,_Praising African immigrants in the city of Worcester near Boston as very successful in business and in community giving, newly elected Massachusetts State Treasurer, Deborah B. Goldberg urged the entire African community in the Commonwealth to find ways to unite for a show of strength in numbers, then get proactively involved in applying for various offices within their localities, if they wish to share more of the available State resources for their current and future generations.
During an interview with Ajabu Africa News on the heels of an Ethnic Media Round table Conference held recently at her office at the State House in Boston, Treasurer Goldberg said that the African Immigrant community if fairly new in the area and has not been visible when decisions are made at various levels as witnessed with other communities of color especially the Chinese and the Spanish.
She urged Africans to get together in community associations that will show a strength in numbers, approach their local leaders such as councilors, mayors, State Representatives to then demand recognition and involvement in civic matters. " You've gotta get involved. It can be done. Unite in community organizations, partnerships and approach your local leaders to shake things up and demand recognition. Apply for positions in local school boards, fire departments, and other areas," she said. The treasurer added that in her capacity as the first ever chief financial officer of the Commonwealth from a minority ethnic community (Jewish), she is very much interested in working with all communities including hard to reach communities of color to have an increased say in the way resources shared in the Bay State. She said that she recognizes the talent in the African community and would like to work with the community to improve things that they care about. During her long involvement in civic matters, Goldberg revealed that she worked extensively to help the Asian community get a foothold in the state affairs, helping unite various groups and mentoring young Asian women.
She added that she was working hard with others stakeholders in the Commonwealth to reduce the budget deficit while promoting important investments in community programs especially in education and infrastructure development.
Urging Africans to figure out programs that might be of interest to their community, the Treasurer said that one of her roles is to enable funding for such programs that have been been initiated and referred through grassroots collaboration with local leaders . "I will work with you on issues that you care about. But you have got to get involved," she emphasized. | |||||||||
