LOWELL, MA__ A "Resist Trump" rally is scheduled outside City Hall Friday evening, the day Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated as 45th president of the United States. The rally, organized by the group Solidarity Lowell, will begin at 6 p.m. The informal group was formed after the election and has goals to help those threatened by a Trump presidency, including women, immigrants and minorities, said Danny Keating, a Middlesex Community College student who serves on the group's coordinating committee. The group is fighting to show it "won't stand for Trump's agenda of hate," he said. The group has also held smaller anti-Trump rallies called "visibilities" in the city in recent weeks in the lead-up to Friday's rally. Keating said the group expects about 100 people to attend Friday night. Lowell once packed the Tsongas Center last January for a Trump rally, but the city voted overwhelmingly for his opponent, Hillary Clinton, by more than a 2-to-1 margin. Clinton also won Chelmsford, Westford and Littleton, along with the state as a whole, but Trump captured Billerica, Dracut, Tewksbury and Wilmington among Lowell-area towns. | |||||||||
