Police have arrested a man believed to be the mastermind of the murder of Thika millionaire businesswomen Joyce Wambui.
Morris Mutwiri, 37, was arrested on Tuesday from his hideout in Embu town and taken to Gatanga for questioning.
He is the husband to Purity Wanjiru, a house help at Wambui's house.
Detectives from Makuyu Flying squad, who are leading the investigations, also recovered a blood-stained hoe and metal bar, which are believed to have been used to kill the trader on February 27.
Detectives said Mutwiri led the police to Wambui's house where the weapons were recovered hidden in a cupboard in the main house.
Wambui was clobbered to death by criminals who did not steal anything at her Maki home in Thika. Mutwiri's arrest brings to eight the number of suspects arrested in connection with the murder. Among the suspects who have appeared in court include Wanjiru and Wambui’s son-in-law Cyrin Chege. Others were Vinius Mariga, Tom Kariuki, John Maina, James Munene and John Wanyoike. Detectives leading investigations told the Star that the probe had taken a new twist after the suspect told investigators of a planned robbery. According to the sources, Mutwiri, who has since confessed to the murder, said a family member had promised to pay Sh300,000 if hired men stole cash from the businesswoman. Mutwiri's statement sharply contradicts the earlier statement by Wanjiru, who claimed that the trader's murder was a planned assassination. Wanjiru told Kirwara police that the killers had received a Sh500,000 down-payment from unnamed people to kill Wambui, She said more money would have been paid after the killers completed the assignment. She named four men alleged to have been in the hired killers, but police investigations have revealed that the information was not credible. | |||||||||
