Police in Fort Portal, Uganda fired live bullets and teargas before arresting a senior pastor on Monday.
Pastor Dan Mubiru, who is attached to the Pentecostal church is alleged to have led a rival faction to reid on another church.
According to eye witnesses, church members from Jerusalem Miracle Centre, led by Pr Mubiru stormed Bukwali Bethsaida Miracle Centre, demanding that Nabukeera Adyeeri and his followers vaccate the premises on grounds that they are not the rightful owners of the land and the church itself. "We have been in this church for over five years when Mubiru and his colleagues broke away and started their own church they started deploying agents next to our church to stop Christians from praying in our church but all that failed now he wants to take over the church forcefully," said Nabukeera. Anti-riot police under the command of Francis Yesamu raided the church and asked Mubiru and his followers to vacate the church and when they reinstated police arrested and detained him at Fort Portal Police station. The two suspects in police custody attacked Bethsaida church in west division when its members had gone to the sub county for an arbitration meeting by the leaders. "The wrangles have been on going on when we failed to agree he left Mubiru left and went to establish his church Jerusalem Mracle Center but since that he has been interfering with our," Mugume Vincent a member of the church said. The Kabarole district anti-riot police commander Yesamu, said they arrested the suspected ring leaders who are now detained at Fort Portal Central Police Station. The police closed off the church and asked the leaders to first resolve their wrangles before it is reopened. The church was handed over to Nabukeera who was taking care of it the act that is reportedly to have annoyed the Mubiru faction who mobilised and raided the church. Willy Magezi the LCIII chairman for west division were the church is located said that he had invited the leaders of the church for a meeting to find a way forward but Mubiru and his team never turned up. "This church should be closed because it is going to cause a lot of conflicts in the area Mubiru went and established another church but still he interfering with the members and as leaders we are concerned," Frank Masude the LCI chairman said. Masude said that the police ordered all the speakers and other valuables in the church to be loaded on the police pickup truck and taken at Fort Portal central police station. | |||||||||
