LOWELL, MASS.,__The immediate former chairman of the Catholic Men's Association at St. Michael’s Kenyan Community Catholic Church in Lowell, Massachusetts, has died.

According to media reports and friends, David Mithamo, 47, was first diagnosed with cancer more than ten years ago. He bravely fought the disease and pushed it into remission. He has been in relatively good spirits and health ever since, till it ferociously charged back about two years ago. He died at the Lowell General Hospital last Monday morning while undergoing treatment, following an emergency admission.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy Ann Kibuthu, a sister, Purity, and, most painfully, his two young children, Daughter Nicole and Son Jesse.

A well known and respected member of the Kenyan community in Lowell, the late Mithamo hailed from Magutu village in Mathira location, Nyeri County in central Kenya. He was a dedicated and staunch member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. As news of the shocking death spread through social media, family and friends started streaming to his house at 106 Lundberg St., Lowell, for prayers and funeral arrangements.

Speaking to Ajabu Africa News, one of Mithamo's friend intimated that the news had taken him by utter surprise. They had spent time outside enjoying the Summer weather most recently at the just concluded Lowell African Festival on June 14th.

"It is impossible to believe that David is gone," said Mosez Mathenge, a close friend. We hung out briefly last Saturday at the African festival and nothing seemed out of the ordinary with him, and I wish I knew that brief moment would be our last for I would have made it last. He was jovial and chatty, but I did not accommodate a longer period for him," Mathenge concluded.

"Mithamo was the most friendly guy you ever came across. Always smiling and engaging in a conversation that left you feeling great. You could never tell he was struggling with cancer at all," said Harrison Maina, CEO of Ajabu Media and a friend of the later father of two.

"So sad he has gone so soon. We wish his family quick healing and acceptance as he rests in Peace," he added.

According to close friends, the late father of two was always seen accompanying his kids to a church service on Sundays. He lived a full rich life, a life he never regretted, enriched in his faith and following in the footsteps he was taught while growing up.

Mithamo was born on January 27th 1972, not to greatness, but over the course of his life he achieved greatness. His dedication and influence did not stop at the back pew of St. Michael's; he extended his skills to the socio-economic and spiritual scene, where he exerted his unique leadership skills to steer many community projects, private, commercial and public to fruition.

He was the epitome of what defines family life, the very definition of fatherhood, who in life and death should be emulated. He once averred in a private conversation that to him fatherhood without presence was worthless. Many can attest that he not only spoke those words, but lived them! And those who never had the opportunity to know him will have a chance to learn from his life.

Although the late Mithamo has left an indelible mark among members of his church and wider community, it is the recovery period that will be most trying. No child wants to be told that their parent is deceased. It must be something that God our Creator forgot to include in our DNA.

The demise of a parent, no matter how old, summons a sense of helplessness in us and this is where the duty of the community comes in. Mithamo is gone but his young family has been left behind. The gauntlet is down and the Herculean task is up; it is a time for the community to come together to walk with the family up to and until they can walk on their own.

Family, friends and well wishers are meeting daily at their home: 106 Lundberg St. Lowell, MA from 6 PM for prayers and funeral arrangements.

The St. Michael catholic community, Lowell has intentioned their 12:30pm Mass on Sunday, July 7th, 2019 in his memory and honor which will be followed by a fundraiser to help the family offset the funeral costs immediately following the Mass in their church hall downstairs at 3:30pm.
