“When the common man does well, the whole economy does well”. BOSTON, Mass.,_ On Sunday July 18, 2021, Kenya’s Vice President and presidential candidate under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) banner, Dr. William Ruto, opened an office in Boston to represent members and supporters from the six-state region of New England. New England consists of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine. This was seen as a strategic move to win more votes as the region is home to a large population of Kenyan immigrants. The official launch took place at a colorful event held at the Well of Worship Ministries Church in Dracut, about 30 miles north of Boston. This event was led by Veronica Maina, (the Party’s Secretary General) Bahati MP, Hon. Kimani Ngunjiri and Soi MP, and Hon. Caleb Kositany. Appearing at the meeting via Zoom from Kenya, the vice president led supporters in celebrating Njuguna Wanjiku’s recent victory over Jubilee candidate, Kariri Njama. Wanjiku, UDA’s candidate for Kiambaa MP, won by a small margin and clinched the hotly contested seat left vacant by the sudden death of Paul Koinange.
He urged Kenyans in the diaspora to support UDA in its goal to create a fully funded ministry for Diaspora affairs once he takes over leadership after the 2022 general elections. Such a ministry, Ruto said, would enable millions of Kenyans in the diaspora to effectively coordinate matters of interest to them such as streamlining the acquisition of their investments back home, voting procedures, imports and experts as well as immigration. He thanked Kenyans abroad for their support to the economy with their remittances. Ruto further said that UDA is at the forefront of creating a movement of Kenyans that aims to grow job opportunities for the common mwananchi. “Our hustler movement will adopt a bottoms-up approach that will create jobs for 17 million jobless Kenyans. When the common man does well, the whole economy does well”. He urged Kenyans in the diaspora to get involved in the electoral process in Kenya in order to bring in good. He added that the punishment for not voting in an election is to be led by unintelligent people. Dr. Ruto congratulated the officials of the New England UDA Chapter, led by Paul Muite of Nashua, NH, for the great organization that gave birth to the office. Secretary General, Veronica Maina, said that the win by UDA’s candidate should signal the end of the ruling party, Jubilee. She condemned Jubilee for the hardship and deprivation that the average man has suffered under its leadership. Maina added that UDA is working to ensure that Kenyans in the diaspora can vote during the upcoming presidential elections. She urged more Kenyans in the diaspora to register as members of UDA online via the party’s website. Bahati MP in Nakuru, Kimani Ngunjiri called on the officials of the UDA New England Chapter to be inclusive of all Kenyans in the region. He also mentioned that it would be critically important to create a Ministry for the Diaspora since it would be the only way to hold the government accountable for the promises they make. “I am the MP for Bahati in Nakuru. If I don’t deliver what I promise to you here in the diaspora, you cannot come back and fire me or vote me out. Only a diaspora ministry in a diaspora constituency can give you that ability,” he added. The MP for Soi constituency in Rift Valley, Caleb Kositany highly commended UDA’s elevation of Kenyan women to positions of leadership starting with the appointment of Veronica Maina to the Secretary General’s office. He stated that the downfall oof Jubilee had been imminent and inevitable. He expressed optimism that the new party would unite the nation in a godly way. Some members of the Kikuyu community feared the possibility of another wave of tribal violence in the Rift Valley, should UDA not win the 2022 general elections. Kositany assured them that those clashes were not really tribal but political considering they occurred specifically around election time and did not occur in elections of 2013 and 2017. “We will never see such clashes again” said the fiery Ngunjiri. As the chairman of the lands committee in Parliament, Kositany promised hope to all those Kenyans who had lost their land during the elections. He assured them that the government is working hard to digitize the lands office. This should eliminate the rampant cases of fake title deeds, and other land-related corruption.
