Canadian-based Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna, who has been exiled since 2018, has finally returned to the country.

Dr Miguna arrived Thursday morning at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport aboard a Kenya Airways flight.

He was deported following his role in the swearing-in of opposition chief Raila Odinga as the “people’s president” in January 2018 following the disputed 2017 presidential elections.

In his short address upon arrival, Dr Miguna thanked his supporters who turned out in large numbers to vote for President William Ruto in the August 2022 elections.

He further said he will be following up on numerous court orders that were granted in his favour but disobeyed by the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"As you all know, there are very many court orders that have been accumulating because there are people who acted with impunity. In the coming weeks and months, I will make sure that all those who violated my rights are held accountable for the sake of justice," Dr Miguna said.

In 2018, the lawyer was charged with treason-related offences and his attempts to return to Kenya, despite several court orders issued to facilitate his return, bore no fruit.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga did not hide his distaste for the executive’s dismissal of the courts after orders issued were ignored.

In past interviews, Dr Miguna revealed that he was beaten, tortured and drugged before being forcibly removed from Kenya.

Miguna attends Mashujaa Day fete at Uhuru Gardens

Lawyer Miguna Miguna headed to Uhuru Gardens along Lang'ata road to attend the 59th Mashujaa Day celebration just moments after he touched down.

A jovial Miguna was seen walking into Uhuru Gardens shortly after he addressed the media at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Miguna's homecoming

Miguna arrived in Kenya today, October 20, 2022, marking an end to years of exile.

Miguna expressed his utmost gratitude towards the current administration for enabling him to return home after almost five years of exile.

"I would like to extend my gratitude to the Judiciary that took firm on the side of the rule of law, I must extend my gratitude to Kenyans that voted overwhelmingly for the Kenya Kwanza government because that is central for me," the lawyer stated.

"Without this administration, I would not be back home, I am thanking his excellency the president, the deputy president and his administration and everybody else who has worked tirelessly to make sure that my rights are protected and the rights of every other Kenyan," he added.

While commending the head of state President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, Miguna affirmed that it was unjust for any Kenyan-born citizen to be forcefully removed from his country and punished in a foreign country.

"What has happened to me should never have happened to anyone else, a Kenyan-born citizen cannot be discarded, removed, forcefully from the country and punished in a foreign land," he added.
