BOSTON,--The much awaited, first ever African Hidden Talents competition in New England kicked off yesterday with Nigerian Nollywood top host, Perez Egbi, 3 judges and performers from Kenya, Nigeria, Cape Verde Islands communities providing maximum entertainment during day one of the show.
About two dozen competitors showed up for the event, with 5 making it to the grand finale that will be held in September, while over a dozen also made it to the second round that will continue tomorrow.
However, organizers said that more first time competitors are also welcome to showcase their talents tomorrow as well and get a shot to the Grand finale, where the winner will scoop $3,500 cash prize. "We are not locking anyone out. New entrants can come tomorrow Sunday and register at the door. We want to bring out all the African talents that we can in this region. All you have to do is show up. There is no age limit and there is no registration fee," said Lilian Emefiele, producer of the new show. "I love this thing. There is a lot of talent among Africans here and I am having a lot of fun. I am so glad that I came and I hope to see more people on Sunday," said host Perez, who flew in from Nigerian for specifically to encourage Africans in Boston to explore their artistic talents.
The inaugural day of the event saw fierce competition among performers, forcing the three judges--Taka Tani, an actress form Cameroon, Jack Baguma from the Ugandan Community in Burlington and Naomi Osagiede from the Nigerian community based in Brockton, and president of the African Hidden Talents, into a lively back and forth over who would qualify to advance. The second place winner will get $2,500 with the third finisher pocketing $1,000. Among items presented during the first day included gospel music presentations, secular music, poems, and dances.
