KAMPALA.
Former vice president Gilbert Bukenya yesterday became the first aspirant to pick forms for nomination as the Opposition's joint presidential candidate under The Democratic Alliance (TDA) grouping.
Prof Bukenya, who was escorted by supporters, was received by Bishop Zac Niringiye, the TDA coordinator and the former Katikkiro (prime minister) of Buganda Kingdom, Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere, who ushered him into the nomination room.
"Tackling poverty is my priority number one. We have the plan that will be wholly and fully implementable. The poor have been so abused and so exploited beyond reason by the current government," Prof Bukenya said.
He said the sole aim of the Opposition alliance is to remove President Museveni from power because he will never address the people's demands.
"Therefore, I am not a believer in 'no reforms, no participation in elections'. This is giving a silver plate to the current dictatorship. I will participate in the coming general elections to defeat this regime, thereafter embark on genuine reforms," Prof Bukenya said.
Meanwhile, TDA has extended the exercise of receiving nomination forms of aspirants for the joint presidential candidate which were due to expire today, to September 10.
Bishop Zac Niringiye said this would not affect their earlier scheduled programme, maintaining that a joint presidential candidate would be announced on September 14 after a TDA summit retreat that will choose the candidate. | |||||||||
