Kampala--The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and the National Information Technology Authority (NITA) have launched a joint online reporting platform to crack down on sexual and pornographic material posted on internet sites.
While launching the platform on Thursday, Mr James Saaka, the NITA executive director, said mobile phone and Internet penetration have created new challenges of pornography proliferation.
He said smartphones and Internet cafes are the biggest promoters of pornography.
Mr Saaka also said telecommunication companies and Internet service providers cannot be blamed because initially, when these services were being introduced, it was not envisaged that criminals would use the technology to promote their evil interests.
"When we leave our children at home most of the time, the nearest person they interact with is the mobile phone. We do not know who they are communicating with. This is where they are being recruited into funny activities," he said.
According to Fred Langford, the IWF deputy chief executive officer, many children are exposed to crimes hosted in Europe, Asia and America and they are being recruited into sexual and pornographic networks through the Internet using videos, pictures and other media.
"Adult pornography is different from child pornography because these are adults who have consented to each other but with child pornography, the child is not aware of what is happening to them," he said.
He added: "All you have to do is to alert us about the abusive content and we shall use our networks worldwide to investigate where it has been hosted and we shall follow up and ensure that the content is pulled down."
He said they will use the internet service providers, government agencies and telecommunication companies to track the culprits.
