Mandera, Kenya: A suspected Al-Shabaab militant was Saturday killed when an IED he was planting on the roadside went off in Dabacity, Mandera County. Four others, who were with him, managed to escape on foot after the blast went off. The four were injured. Police and witnesses said the incident happened at about noon. Police who were on patrol at Garesesala within Dabasiti area said they spotted five men digging a trench on the road. "On seeing the officers, the militants panicked and in the process the IED they were planting went off killing one of them. The others managed to escape on foot as they shot at the officers," said a police officer, who asked not to be named. The incident comes days after the gang tried unsuccessfully to attack a bus. Two people were killed in the attack. Police say intelligence reports show the gang operating in the area is a splinter group from Al-Shabaab that has joined Islamic State. In the past month, about four attacks have happened in Mandera. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said a major operation has been mounted in the area to rid the gang. "We seek the help of citizens to be able to contain these terrorists," he said. | |||||||||
