Two officers allegedly sacked on Thursday for blocking Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta's motorcade caused traffic jam and were taking bribes, IG Joseph Boinnet has said. Boinnet clarified that Corporal Barnaba Rutto and driver constable Joel Atuti have not been discharged but were given dismissal notification and will meet a commission, be interrogated and a report be made. "CCTV footage showed the two cops taking a bribe. They had also parked badly causing huge traffic jam," he said on phone on Friday. But the dismissal letter exclusively obtained by the Star indicated the two were discharged from the police force and had seven days to appeal. A source within the President's escort unit told the Star the Head of State reportedly "saw what was happening and made several calls to the top cops". He said Uhuru "has a humane heart" but the commanders were angered by the incident and made the decision in the heat of the moment. However, Atuti insisted he and Rutto were arresting a matatu driver who had parked in the middle of the road, obstructing other motorists. Presidential escort boss Edward Mbugua who was with the Head of State at the time had promised to give comment, but efforts to reach him by the time of going to press were unsuccessful as his phone remained engaged. | |||||||||
