The government has said it will announce three days of national mourning on Sunday upon the arrival of the body of former First Lady Lucy Kibaki from London.

Flags will also fly half-mast, while condolence books will be available across all counties from Friday.

Government spokesperson Erick Kiraithe said on Thursday that the plane carrying the remains of the former First Lady will touch down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at around 5.30am on Sunday.

Mrs Kibaki passed away on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London.

"Condolence books will be available at the following venues: Harambee House, Parliament, KICC, Holy Family Basilica, Consolota Shrine Westlands and all 47 county headquarters," said Mr Kiraithe.

"A National working committee comprised of members of the Kibaki Family and government officials has been set up, and is responsible for ensuring that the former First Lady is given a befitting send off," he added.

Mrs Kibaki was admitted to Nairobi Hospital last month. Earlier, she had sought treatment at Gertrude's Hospital in Muthaiga.

She leaves behind four children: Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagai and Tony Githinji.

Her husband, former President Mwai Kibaki, daughter Judy and son Anthony were at her bedside when she breathed her last at around 4am on April 26.
