A quarrel turned tragic in Thika, Kenya, on Wednesday after a man murdered his wife by stabbing her 18 times. It was not the first attempt for George Njenga, 35, to kill his wife Joyce Wangari, 32. Last month he waylaid her on her way from the shop and tried to stab her with a knife. "He was arrested and released just a week ago after his wife withdrew the charges," a neighbour, Veronica Njeri said. The man tried to kill himself with the same knife and is admitted at the Thika level five hospital. "He sustained severe injuries in his lower abdominal area and his intestines had been damaged," said a nurse at the hospital. The woman had just come from taking lunch to their three--year-old girl who is in kindergarten when they picked a quarrel. Efforts by neighbours to save the woman were futile as Njenga locked the door from the inside. "We pleaded with him to open the door and solve the matter amicably but he declined. His wife was screaming that he was slaughtering her," Njeri said. Another witness said when they broke the door, they found Wangari's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood while Njenga was holding the blood--stained kitchen knife. "She had told us before that her husband warned her that he would one day slaughter her. We told her to leave but she insisted on staying because of her work," Njeri said. The residents said the suspect was a quiet man and always stayed indoors. "We are shocked because we know he is always quiet, chewing miraa, we never thought he was capable of committing such a heinous and heartless act," Martin Kinyua said. Wangari's body was taken to General Kago funeral home. Their daughter is in the custody of her aunt. | |||||||||
