LOWELL, MA--Several thousand Africans immigrants and friends from the city of Lowell, other neighboring cities in Massachusetts as well as from far flung regions such as New Jersey congregated at the renowned Sampas Pavilion along Pawtucket Boulevard--on the banks of the Merrimack river-- to celebrate the 16th edition of the increasingly popular Lowell African Festival last Saturday June 18.
According to many festival goers interviewed by Ajabu Africa News, the Lowell African Festival is the best African cultural festival anywhere held anywhere in the entire Diaspora, providing a picture perfect scenario for children, youth adults and senior citizens to mingle as they remember their African heritage. Business vendors also reported roaring business with food being the fastest moving product, including the Liberian Cassava leaf and the Kenyan Nyama Choma (roast goat meat).Other items on sale included a wide variety of arts and crafts, and African inspired clothing, jewelry, as well as professional services. The event was graced by the mayor of Lowell, Edward J. Kennedy Jr. and a battery of other local civic and spiritual leaders. The event has always been organized by the African Cultural Association, a non-profit organization that seeks to promote the African culture and heritage in the rapidly expanding immigrant gateway city. According to Zoe Kamara, one of the organizers, the African Cultural Association is urging more Africans to volunteer to organize future events for the benefit of the current and future generations. "We are looking for more organizers and sponsors. This event makes all of us happy, so if you would like to help us organize, please contact us through our website, www.Lowell African Festival.org," Kamara told Ajabu African News, the leading African Diaspora News organization in the region. The event was co-hosted by Monica Swaida, a renowned African entreprenuer, actress and music entertainer in Lowell together with Eric Chu, a renowned dancer.
